One of the must see places in Rome that I had read about in so many blogs and just could not help myself reserve a day to explore this corner of Rome that is so beautiful and so picture perfect, that anyone who wants to get the most Instagram-worthy clicks needs to visit this village.
Trastevere is away from the touristy hub of the city and a heaven for all the food enthusiasts reading this. I must say going to this small area south-west of the Rome center helped us discover and get a feel of the roman culture.
So when in Trastevere… What is it that you need to see and do ???
Walk up to the Ponte Sisto and cross over a beautiful bridge across the river Tiber that connects this main city to this village (P.S. – we visited in March and it was a bit rainy and mostly cloudy – best season to visit is April onward till September
Trastevere piazza and the Basilica – Santa Maria di Trastevere.

You will always find people sitting on these steps and relaxing, reading books, grabbing a quick bite before heading towards Rome center. Sit down on the steps as gaze at the Tiber river in front. Visit the Beautiful Basilica of Santa Maria di Trastevere. We could not visit as there was some event in progress there. But from what I had seen on blogs earlier, the basilica was founded in the 3rd century… That is a really really old church, folks. Legend states that the church stands on a spot where a fountain of oil miraculously appeared from the ground.
Explore the narrow cobbled streets
Walk around the colorful narrow lanes and find a quite place to sit and sip on some coffee or have a gelato. My favorite place for a quick stop over to have some gelato before heading towards a quick trek to get one of the best view of Rome city – Fior di Luna … The chocolate gelato is heavenly… if the weather is cold, try their Cioccolata Calda (no kidding.. I found my new high – Italian hot chocolate is almost as thick as a pudding).
Terrazza del Gionocolo

Trek up to the Terrazza del Gionocolo for an amazing view of Rome and Vatican. The road to reach this Terrazza is also very scenic and lined with cherry blossom trees. You might have to walk up some really steep slopes and then climb some crazy steep stairs but climb up to this place was completely worth it.
Click some pics with the Il Fontanone and then head towards the Terrace. Walk amidst a scenic road flanked with tall trees called the passeggiata del Gianocolo. The terrace offers some pretty views of Rome and the Vatican though not as great as the Terrazza del Pincio (Don’t mind my poses – was really hungry and had to trek down for our next stop)

There is also a huge park and a Botanic Garden next to the Terrace.
Aperitivo at My Favorite – Vin Allegro
So I was going through one of the blogs and came across this cute corner of Trastevere – ivy covered walls, spindly chairs and cute tables arranged in the courtyard and a cozy corners inside this Bar. A must when in Trastevere … Vin Allegro.
This amazing place serves one of the best aperitivo buffet in the whole of Rome (wide range of snacks served on the bar counter which can be had with a drink of your choice from the Aperitivo menu). A cozy gem in a scenic neighborhood where you will get to feel the local roman culture and meet some locals (Italians are very friendly people – you try to speak a few words in Italian and they already love you – one reason why I fell in Love with Rome so much)
Below is the map of our walking tour in Trastevere. Check out the pins for the guided tour:
That in spite of the rains was lovely to walk around. However, the summers in Trastevere are exceptionally picturesque. So plan your trip to get some super cool memories and roam around Bougainvillea and Ivy covered houses, narrow cobbled streets and vintage bars with the most amazing house wines I have ever had. Ciao.
Thanks for taking me back to this gorgeous Roman hood!
